A senior Greek official is urging the international community to do more to manage the flow of refugees to Europe — and criticizing some EU countries for refusing to welcome migrants.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Deputy Defense Minister Dimitris Vitsas says the international community "must face the refugee crisis together."

Vitsas also urges several Eastern European countries not to shut their doors on migrants. He says that "a fortress with smaller fortresses within the European Union" does not work.

Vitsas is criticizing recent remarks by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who questioned a historic treaty that defined Turkey's current-day borders with Greece.
