Police say four black men in Socorro, Texas, attacked and raped a 70-year-old Mexican-American man and shouted racial slurs during the assault, KFoxTV.com reported.

Police have called the attack a hate crime.

On Thursday morning at 6 a.m., the alleged victim was taking a walk when the men got out of their vehicle and demanded money, the report said. When the man refused, the report says he was thrown into the van and raped.

"These four people know each other well enough to do something like this in front of each other. This is an atrocity," David Garcia, a town spokesman, said, according to the report. "This man was somebody's dad. This man was somebody's brother, somebody's friend."

The victim required surgery and is listed in serious condition at a hospital, the report said.
