AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Board of Education has refused to approve a biology book by one of the nation's largest publishers, pending an expert review of supposed "errors" on evolution.
The board gave preliminary approval to new science books for use in classrooms statewide late Thursday night.
But it held off approving a biology book by Pearson to have outside experts check concerns raised by a volunteer review panel.
The objections questioned the theory of evolution as an explanation for development of life on Earth.
Some creationists — who see God's hand in the creation of the universe — have long sought edits to de-emphasize evolution in science lessons.
Three board members will appoint experts to check the book.
The board will vote again on the issue later Friday.
