A man who survived a deadly encounter with police on a New Orleans bridge in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath will resume his testimony in the case against five current or former officers.

Jose Holmes Jr. testified Wednesday that he already was wounded and lying on the ground when somebody leaned over a concrete barrier on the Danziger Bridge and shot him twice in the stomach.

Holmes, who is expected to return to the witness stand Thursday for cross-examination by defense attorneys, said he didn't know police were shooting at him, a friend and several relatives as they tried to cross the bridge in search of food less than a week after the devastating 2005 storm. He said officers didn't identify themselves or issue any warnings before they opened fire.
