Authorities say a Metro Nashville police officer has shot and wounded an armed man.

Metro Nashville police said in a statement that 38-year-old officer Jason Sweeney encountered the man Tuesday morning near a fire station while responding to a report of shots fired. The statement says 42-year-old Kevin Lillard ran to an alcove and pointed a gun at the pursuing officer.

Police say Sweeney fired his gun once in self-defense, hitting Lillard in the mid-section.

Sweeney, who is white, wasn't injured. He was placed on routine administrative leave.

Lillard, who is black, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.

Police said Lillard has a criminal history that includes robbery, assault and facilitation of second-degree murder.
