Police say negotiators were called to coax a man out of a Las Vegas apartment after he reportedly chased a stranger down a street with an axe.

Officer Laura Meltzer says a female victim called police just before 7 a.m. Thursday to report the chase.

Meltzer says the victim had been walking near an apartment complex on Swenson Street when the man approached her. Meltzer says the woman was able to get away unscathed and call police from a safe location.

Officers who arrived on the scene say the man had barricaded himself in a nearby apartment. A SWAT team was called to the scene to try to make contact with the suspect.

Police diverted traffic away from the scene.
