A man who told police he ambushed a Philadelphia police officer in the name of Islam is due in court for a preliminary hearing.

Edward Archer is accused of firing into a marked cruiser and shooting Officer Jesse Hartnett more than a dozen times at close range.

The 33-year-old officer survived the January attack after spending two weeks in the hospital.

Archer told police that he thinks they enforce laws that undermine the Quran's teachings. His mother says he had been hearing voices.

FBI director James Comer has said the shooting was being investigated as a terrorist attack but it was not clear if Archer had links to any terror groups.

An FBI spokeswoman this week says she can't provide an update on the investigation before Thursday's hearing.
