DOVER, N.H. – The man convicted of raping and killing a University of New Hampshire student proclaimed his innocence in a recorded prison phone call with his mother days before his sentencing.
Seth Mazzaglia (muh-ZAY'-lee-uh) was convicted of first-degree murder in the October 2012 death of 19-year-old Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott, of Westborough, Massachusetts. Prosecutors say he killed her after she rejected his sexual advances.
Prosecutors discussed the Aug. 6 call Tuesday during a hearing on Mazzaglia's request to skip his sentencing to life imprisonment. In the call, Mazzaglia says he should have been found "innocent of the big stuff."
In a transcript of the call provided Wednesday, Heather Mazzaglia tells her son Marriott's family is in agony and he should face them.
Mazzaglia withdrew his request. His sentencing is set for Thursday.
