St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says a black male is dead after he was shot and killed by a white officer on the city's north side.

Dotson says two officers were following a suspected stolen car with three people inside Tuesday morning.

He says the car pulled into an alley, two passengers got out and the driver drove away.

Dotson says one passenger was shot after pointing a gun at police. The unidentified victim was declared dead at the scene.

The second passenger was taken into custody, the driver hasn't been found and the car was abandoned about a mile away.

Dotson said he didn't know how many shots were fired by the unidentified officer, who was placed on leave, or whether the suspect fired his gun. Neither officer was injured.
