FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Two North Carolina soldiers were charged with embezzling more than $1 million while deployed in Afghanistan in 2009, The News & Observer reported Sunday.

Edwin Vando and Juan Lamboy Rivera, who were based at Fort Bragg, N.C., were charged with taking nearly $1.3 million in vendor payments, along with an Afghan interpreter, according to US District Court documents filed Thursday.

According to the court documents, Vando and Rivera were sergeants with the 82nd Finance Battalion who were deployed to Camp Eggers in Kabul from May to June 2009. They worked in the finance office, overseeing payments to commercial vendors.
