Shooting at South Carolina State University leaves two dead

The university has canceled Friday classes in response to the shooting

Two people were killed and another person was wounded in a campus shooting Thursday at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) released a statement on Friday confirming three men were shot inside a room in the Hugine Suites housing complex.

One of the men died at the scene, and the other man died at the hospital, according to SLED.

The victims' identities have not yet been released by the Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office.

The university said it issued a campus lockdown at about 9:15 p.m. local time Thursday following a report of a shooting at the Hugine Suites student residential complex.

The campus lockdown was lifted Friday morning, though authorities have not confirmed any arrests or suspect information.

Friday classes were canceled, the university said, and counselors are available for students.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-SC, took to X to react to the shooting, which she described as "heartbreaking."

"We are heartbroken by the tragic shooting at South Carolina State University. We are praying for the families who lost loved ones, for the injured victim’s full recovery, and for every student and faculty member impacted by this senseless act of violence," Mace wrote in a post. 

"We stand with law enforcement as they work to apprehend the suspect and bring them to justice," she continued. "Violence like this will NOT be tolerated in South Carolina."
