Security head no longer with prison system after inmate riot

DOVER, Del. – The former security chief at a Delaware prison where inmates staged a deadly riot and hostage-taking last winter is no longer with the state Department of Correction.

Department spokeswoman Jayme Gravell confirmed Friday that Jeffrey Carrothers' employment with the prison system ended Oct. 20. She declined to provide further details as to whether he quit voluntarily or had been forced out.

Carrothers was reassigned to the DOC's central administration building after the Feb. 1 riot, in which a correctional officer was killed and three other prison workers were taken hostage. He had retained his title of correctional security superintendent.

Eighteen inmates were indicted last month for their alleged roles in the disturbance, including 16 charged with first-degree murder and assault. All face charges of kidnapping, riot and conspiracy.
