The San Francisco police chief says five officers indicted by federal prosecutors have been suspended without pay and had their guns taken away.

Chief Greg Suhr made the announcement Thursday at a news conference shortly after federal prosecutors announced the indictments.

Suhr says the department was shaken by the charges.

Two of the officers and a former officer have been charged with distributing controlled substances and stealing drugs, money, computers, electronic devices and gift cards.

Prosecutors said three officers were charged separately with civil rights violations for entering single occupancy hotel rooms illegally and intimidating occupants.
