SAN DIEGO-- A San Diego border inspector has pleaded not guilty to charges of taking $500,000 in bribes and smuggling nearly five tons of marijuana.

An indictment unsealed Thursday accuses Lorne Leslie Jones of accepting the money over ten years in exchange for allowing vehicles with drugs and illegal immigrants through border crossings.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that prosecutors are seeking criminal forfeiture of the money from Jones, representing the bribes he received.

The 46-year-old Chula Vista man was arrested Sept. 30. He has worked for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection since 1994.
