NEW YORK – A Russian citizen who worked in New York City as a banker has asked a federal judge to toss out charges he participated in a Cold War-style Russian spy ring.
Lawyers for Evgeny Buryakov (YEHV'-geh-nee BUHR'-yah-kohv) filed papers Thursday in Manhattan federal court. They asked that charges brought against him after his January arrest be dismissed.
The lawyers say the United States has never before prosecuted a person working openly for a foreign state-owned agency.
Buryakov has pleaded not guilty to charges he conspired to spy and acted as a spy.
At the time he lived in the Bronx with his Russian wife and two children and worked at the Manhattan branch of a Russian bank. He arrived in the United States in 2010 and secured a work visa.
