A $3,000 reward is being offered for the return of a bayonet snapped from a World War I memorial in Lynchburg and the apprehension of the vandal.

Local veterans and citizens created the reward after the city's Doughboy statue was vandalized earlier this month.

The News & Advance reports that it's the second such incident in asany as years.

The last time this occurred, the broken bayonet was found propped up by the statue. This time, city workers say they could find no trace of the bayonet.

The bronze Doughboy is located at the foot of Monument Terrace. Its gaze has watched over many community events, including a weekly "Support Our Troops" rally held by local veterans.
