SAN ANTONIO -- A 78-year-old retired priest living in San Antonio is concerned about drug cartels and the people he served in Mexico.

Father Ted Pfeifer, if he had his druthers, would be spending his golden years in the southern Mexican region he called home for nearly 36 years.

He risked his life battling drug cartels from tainting his beloved villages with lucrative offers to join their cause.

Pfeifer has recorded his experiences in his book "When the Wolves Came: A Memoir," which is being made into a documentary.

The former paramedic will be honored Wednesday during a private banquet in San Antonio.

The San Antonio Express-News reports a stroke three years ago forced Pfeifer to return to Texas.
