Investigators say a 15-year-old, would-be thief who jumped into a Jeep Cherokee was being watched by a Southern California policeman who rented the SUV.

The plainclothes officer used his remote to lock the Redland's teenager inside.

Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker says the San Manuel Indian Reservation officer was on assignment Wednesday when he saw the teen climb into the SUV.

Baker wrote in a statement that the officer took the youth into custody and waited for Redlands police to arrive and make the arrest.

The boy was booked into San Bernardino Juvenile Hall for investigation of attempted auto theft.
