Police and volunteers are searching for a 4-year-old from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe who was reported missing by his family in mid-Michigan.

Tribal Public Relations Director Frank Cloutier tells The Associated Press that the search was ongoing Friday in the Mount Pleasant area after Carnal Chamberlain was reported missing Thursday night. More than a dozen agencies were involved in the search, which was led by tribal police.

In some reports the child's first name was spelled Carnel. Cloutier says the circumstances surrounding his disappearance were under investigation.

Tribal members and others participated in the search, which included Saginaw Chippewa tribe land about 120 miles northwest of Detroit. WSGW-AM reports a least 100 volunteers gathered Friday morning to help.
