Police are searching for one or more suspects in connection with a shooting at a hotel in suburban Boston.

Police say they initially responded to a reported "active shooter" situation at the Crown Plaza in Natick around 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The hotel was evacuated while authorities searched for possible suspects. Guests, who were allowed inside a mall across the street, later returned to their rooms.

Natick Chief James Hicks says the victim told police he was walking in front of the hotel when a car approached him, so he moved into the hotel and a shot was fired. The car then fled the area. The intended target was not struck. His name was not released.

What prompted the shooting remains under investigation. Police are reviewing security surveillance video.
