CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police in North Carolina are making plans for multiple activities as they keep an eye on protests following the mistrial declared in the case of a white police officer accused in the shooting death of an unarmed black man.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney told reporters at a news conference Saturday that officers are monitoring multiple events in Uptown Charlotte, including a Carolina Panthers preseason football game, a minor league baseball game, two high school football games and a road race.
People protesting Friday's decision in the trial of Officer Randall Kerrick have also scheduled a rally on Saturday.
There were peaceful protests immediately after the decision, but some of the protests turned aggressive Friday evening. Some protesters threw rocks at police, and two people were arrested for assaulting officers.
