A 99-year-old San Francisco woman has won an eviction reprieve, and for now won't have to leave the apartment where she has lived since the 1940s.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that 11 years ago Iris Canada was promised she could keep living in her flat for the rest of her life, for $700 a month.

Lawyers for the unit's owners -- Peter Owens, Stephen Owens and Carolyn Radisch -- contend the retired nurse has not lived continuously in the flat and has failed to keep the place up.

Her attorney, Michael Spalding says she was, for a time, in the hospital following a stroke and caring for a sick relative. A judge postponed the eviction and ordered lawyers for both sides back next week to determine if it should be lifted permanently.
