A Pennsylvania anesthesiologist has been sentenced to three years in prison for felonious assault in an attack with a clawed pry bar on his daughter's estranged husband in a Cleveland suburb.

Sheriff's deputies took 67-year-old Dr. Georges Bensimhon (ben-SEE'-mohn) of Allentown, Pennsylvania, into custody after sentencing in Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County on Tuesday. Bensimhon apologized to his son-in-law before sentencing and said he would never commit another crime.

Prosecutors dropped an attempted aggravated murder charge and other counts against Bensimhon in a plea deal. He faced up to eight years in prison.

Police arrested Bensimhon the morning of the September 2013, attack. His son-in-law, Dr. Seth Alan Hoffer, overpowered him despite a deep gash to the head. Hoffer had Bensimhon pinned to the ground when police arrived.
