The son of an Ohio man sentenced to six years in prison for fatally shooting his ailing wife in her hospital bed says he understands why his father pulled the trigger.

Sixty-eight-year-old John Wise's application for clemency included the letter from his son, Mark.

Mark Wise says he was devastated by his mother's death but nevertheless supports clemency. A copy of his sworn affidavit signed Dec. 19 was provided Friday to the Associated Press by Wise's defense.

Gov. John Kasich's (KAY'-siks) administration won't comment on clemency. The prosecutor in Akron opposes John Wise's request.

The Massillon (MAS'-ih-luhn) man said he shot his wife in 2012 out of love after she suffered aneurysms and appeared to be in pain. Mercy is not a defense to a murder charge in Ohio.
