An Ohio man who prosecutors say allowed his wife to be eaten alive by maggots has pleaded guilty to charges of reckless homicide and failure to provide care to an impaired person.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that 65-year-old Darrel White of Cincinnati waived his right to a trial. He told a judge on Friday that he did the best he could given his wife's condition.

White's wife was bedridden and suffered from debilitating arthritis.

Authorities say White allowed her to die by not taking care of her or taking her to the doctor.

Police say they found her at home on July 23 with maggots and rotting bedsores on her body. The coroner says she had died a day earlier from a blood infection.

White faces up to 6 1/2 years in prison. Sentencing was set for Dec. 15.
