TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A Florida officeholder says the Republican National Convention scheduled for late August in Tampa would be among the casualties if the area is threatened by a hurricane.
Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll said Wednesday that public safety is going to be the "number one priority," and that the convention can be rescheduled.
However, setting a new date for a national political convention could be difficult heading into Labor Day weekend and with the Democratic National Convention set for the following week in Charlotte, N.C.
Carroll said Gov. Rick Scott, who returns Thursday from a trade mission to Spain, would make the call if the GOP convention were threatened by severe weather.
The four-day GOP convention is scheduled for Aug. 27 to 30, smack dab in the middle of Florida's hurricane season.
