A western Massachusetts judge has ordered a homeless man held without bail on charges he tied a 9-year-old girl to a tree by her neck with a jump rope in Northampton.

The Northwestern District Attorney's Office says Northampton District Court Judge Jacklyn Connly ordered 34-year-old Lance Gouvan held without bail Tuesday.

Gouvan and a homeless woman, 26-year-old Megan Bonny, are accused of tying up the girl on July 19 outside a child services center. Police said Gouvan dragged the girl by her hair 15 to 20 feet and tied her up so that she had to stand on her toes.

Both Gouvan and Bonny deny that they tied up the girl. They're charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and other crimes. Both are due back in court on Aug. 23.
