SAN FRANCISCO – A newspaper report says employees operating a hydraulic door at San Francisco Zoo that crushed a baby gorilla were supposed to keep a hand on the stop button at all times.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1u1DNAm ) Wednesday that the warning was included on a sign near the gorilla door. The newspaper obtained a photo of the sign through a public records request.
The gorilla, Kabibe (kuh-BEE'-bay), was killed on Friday when she unexpectedly darted under the door while it was closing.
The zoo has hired animal psychologist Terry Maple to investigate the death. Maple told the Chronicle he will be looking into whether the zookeeper kept a hand on the emergency stop button.
