NEW YORK – A New York City man convicted of raping his former stepdaughter after she accused him years later in a college application essay is due to learn his punishment.
The 62-year-old man faces up to 25 years in prison. His sentencing is set for Monday in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn prosecutors say he raped his then-8-year-old stepdaughter in 2003, but she kept the secret from her family until penning the essay in 2012. Her mother saw it and called police.
The couple had divorced meanwhile. The ex-stepfather denies the rape allegations. His lawyer has portrayed the essay as a bid for admissions officers' sympathy.
The Associated Press is withholding the man's name because disclosing it could identify his accuser. The AP generally does not identify sexual assault victims unless they come forward publicly.
