NEW YORK – New York prosecutors say a woman raped as an 8-year-old by her then-stepfather kept the secret from her family for nearly a decade until she disclosed it in a college admissions essay.
Her now-former stepfather was convicted Thursday in Brooklyn of rape and other charges.
The 62-year-old man has denied the allegations. His lawyer has portrayed the essay as a bid for admissions officers' sympathy.
A court complaint says he repeatedly raped the woman in 2003. The accusation came to light in the 2012 essay, which her mother saw and called police. The mother and the man had divorced years earlier.
The Associated Press is withholding the man's name because disclosing it could identify his accuser. The AP generally does not identify sexual assault victims unless they come forward publicly.
