Feeding ducks or other birds at Scottsdale parks is now an activity that could lead to fines or even doing time.

The Arizona Republic reports a new city ordinance banning people from feeding animals at urban parks goes into effect Friday.

Scottsdale city officials say anyone caught throwing crumbs at ducks, pigeons or other animals can be cited or fined up to $750, and possibly get jail time.

They say the ordinance is an effort to keep parks clean and protect wildlife.

Parks and recreation officials say people sometimes throw whole bags of bread into the water or empty garbage bags full of stale bread on grass and paths.

A Scottsdale police spokesman says police will consider the circumstances of a situation before deciding to cite someone.
