New Hampshire transgender student chosen homecoming king

CONCORD, N.H. – A transgender student has been crowned homecoming king at a New Hampshire high school.

Concord High School students last weekend gave the title to 17-year-old Ray Ramsey. Ramsey was born a female but has been identifying himself as a male for several years, asking people to call him Ray instead of his birth name of Rachael.

Ramsey told the Concord Monitor that after getting cheers from the crowd and hugs from friends, he got especially emotional when his father looked him in the eye and told him how proud he was of him.

Ramsey said he's always found a welcoming environment at home and in school.
