New bid to train social workers on military issues

WASHINGTON – A new program is being launched to train thousands of social workers on how to aid troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

First lady Michelle Obama's "Joining Forces" campaign says the training will help workers spot problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse and the danger signs for homelessness and suicide.

Mrs. Obama's partner in the campaign, Jill Biden, the vice president's wife, says social workers are "uniquely positioned" to help vets and military families.

The program — being run by a social workers' professional association — includes online courses and new standards and credentialing. It's being offered to 650,000 social workers nationwide.
