BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Residents of a New Jersey town insist their opposition to a proposed mosque is about the location and not religious intolerance.
NJ.com reports (http://bit.ly/2q7PomV ) residents of Bernards Township gathered for a meeting Wednesday night. The township committee and planning board discussed lawsuits over the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's proposed mosque.
The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the town in 2016 after it denied the plan for a mosque. Residents at the meeting asked officials not to settle.
Founders of the mosque say the planning board's denial is illegal.
Many homeowners say they have no problem with Muslims but are concerned with traffic and preserving the historic nature of Liberty Corner, a community in the township. Residents say the Islamic Society can find another location.
