RAYMONDVILLE, Texas – Nearly 1,000 inmates have been relocated from the South Texas prison where an uprising allowed prisoners to seize control of part of the facility.
The private contractor that operates the Willacy County Correctional Center said in a statement Tuesday that more than 920 inmates have been transferred to other federal facilities in Texas and elsewhere.
About 1,900 other inmates still need to be moved and contractor Management & Training Corp. says the relocation should be complete by the end of the week.
Once the prison is empty, authorities will assess the amount of damage caused by the unrest that began early Friday and lasted through Saturday.
The inmates are primarily "low-level" offenders who are immigrants in the country illegally. They've complained about conditions at the center, particularly lackluster medical care.
