A mystery man photographed pulling a driver from an SUV dangling over a 20-foot cliff above a northern Idaho canyon has come forward as the daring rescuer.

Jason Warnock of Clarkston, Washington, tells the Lewiston Tribune newspaper (http://bit.ly/1IRKY7o ) that he left soon after saving the 23-year-old driver Wednesday to avoid publicity.

But social media caught up when the photo spread online, and police on Thursday confirmed Warnock yanked the man to safety.

Witnesses say the SUV was driving erratically when it left the road, careened through a yard and over two terraces, and got snared in a chain-link fence that stopped it from crashing into Bryden Canyon.

Police say the driver received minor injuries.

Warnock says he gave media interviews to take pressure off the driver.
