A Chicago mugger ended up with two black eyes and a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he inadvertently selected a mixed martial arts fighter as his victim, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

Police said 24-year-old Anthony Miranda walked up to a car on Chicago's Southwest Side at around 11:30pm Friday and asked the driver for a lighter, then pulled out a handgun and demanded money.

After the driver gave Miranda some money, Miranda ordered him out of the car, Officer John Mirabelli said.

The driver grabbed the mugger's gun and wrestled with him. Miranda suffered two black eyes and cuts to his face, and accidentally shot himself in the ankle with his own gun during the struggle, according to Mirabelli.

The victim, who was not identified, was able to restrain Miranda until police arrived. He told officers at the scene that he was a mixed martial arts fighter.

Miranda was brought to a hospital for treatment before he was taken into custody on $350,000 bail on charges of armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
