SAN DIEGO – Mexican police searched Thursday for the estranged husband of a slain San Diego City College student after finding his car in a Tijuana neighborhood.
Tijuana police issued a public notice asking for help in finding Armando Gabriel Perez, a person of interest in the death of Diana Gonzalez, whose body was found Tuesday in a men's room at the downtown campus.
Fingerprint tests confirmed the identity of the 19-year-old Gonzalez, the mother of a 9-month-old girl, police said.
San Diego police Capt. Jim Collins refused to describe her injuries but said her condition made it difficult to identify her.
Police would not say if any weapons were used or provide any further details.
Perez was considered armed and dangerous after his blue 1999 Ford Mustang was discovered in a neighborhood in the western part of Tijuana.
Last month, Gonzalez filed a police report accusing Perez of kidnapping and repeatedly assaulting her while holding her captive for several days in motel rooms, Collins said.
The husband was jailed as San Diego police investigated and forwarded the case to the district attorney's office, which declined to file charges. Perez was released from custody four days later, the captain said.
District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis would not say why charges were not filed against Perez. Her office said reasons for such determinations are never revealed.
Dumanis declined to comment on Gonzalez's death because of the ongoing investigation but said she takes domestic violence cases seriously.
Gonzalez recently obtained a restraining order against her husband, but it had not yet been served at the time of her death, Collins said.
The couple had been married for about 10 months.
