A Birmingham fire official says a woman who was missing after an explosion rocked an apartment complex was found, but died before she was removed from the debris.

Crews also found a man who had been missing alive and freed him from the rubble Tuesday. Seven others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Birmingham Fire Rescue Service Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis tells The Associated Press the man is in critical but stable condition. The man and woman were unaccounted for after the explosion.

Mardis says both apparently were asleep in a first-floor apartment shortly before the 3 a.m. explosion. The building collapsed, trapping them.

Mardis says the concrete slab from the second flood was on them. Crews used hydraulic jacks and lifting blocks to lift the concrete enough to get to them.
