An attorney for a Puerto Rican nationalist charged in a 1983 robbery in Connecticut says he is negotiating with prosecutors to try to resolve the case ahead of trial.

Defense attorney Richard Reeve said at a bond hearing Monday for his client Norberto Gonzalez Claudio that negotiations are ongoing.

Gonzalez has been jailed since the FBI arrested him last May in Puerto Rico. He has pleaded not guilty to bank robbery and other charges in the $7 million robbery of a Wells Fargo armored car depot in West Hartford.

At the hearing in federal court in Hartford, Reeve said it is important for Gonzalez to be released so he can consult those close to him more freely on his best course.

The judge did not immediately issue a ruling.
