NEW HAVEN, Conn. – An attorney for one of two men sentenced to death in a gruesome Connecticut home invasion says the prisoner sent suicidal letters before he was found unresponsive in his cell Monday.
Tom Ullmann, attorney for Steven Hayes, says Hayes implied in the letters he would be dead by the time they were received. Hayes remains in stable condition at a hospital.
A judge in November denied Hayes' lawsuit seeking to change his conditions at Northern Correctional Institution. Hayes more recently filed an emergency motion seeking relief.
Ullmann says the conditions are oppressive and some prison staff harass Hayes. Employees deny those claims.
The 50-year-old Hayes is on death row for the 2007 killings of a woman and her two daughters after a night of torment inside their suburban Cheshire home.
