Authorities are in negotiations with a man who has taken a person hostage after targeting a random home in Arvada, Colo., police tell Fox News.

Jill McGranaham, the press information officer for the Arvada Police Department, told Fox News on Tuesday that the hostage situation began Monday afternoon. She said the suspect – who was not named – picked a house at random to hide, and he does not know the hostage.

The man is believed to be armed, and authorities have evacuated surrounding homes in the neighborhood as a precaution, McGranaham said.

He barged into the home on Monday and the family inside was able to escape, except a 13-year-old boy, who was the person taken hostage, KDVR reports.

The Denver Post reported that the suspect and a friend called the newspaper Monday night, but police asked that the details of the conversation not be disclosed, according to The Associated Press.

McGranaham could not confirm reports that the suspect is a convicted felon.
