GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) — Globs of oil are washing into Mobile Bay and onto the white-sand beach at Fort Morgan, a Civil War fort.

The coin-size globs could be seen Thursday in the water rolling along the bay's bottom. Soft, brown goo glistened in the sun on the sand near the fort.

A hired cleanup crew waited nearby to begin work — while two volunteers cleaned up the mess.

The oil spill from the exploded rig in the Gulf of Mexico has been spreading north and east in recent days toward the beach resorts at Gulf Shores and the Florida Panhandle.

At Gulf Shores, Ala., beachgoers stood and clapped when an airplane flew by pulling a banner that said: "Obama stop talking. We need action now."
