The former president of an Oregon community college where a gunman killed ten people and injured seven Thursday said in an interview the school only has one unarmed security guard on duty at a time.
Joe Olson, who retired in June as president of the Umpqua Community College told the Associated Press the school had three training exercises with local law agencies in the past two years, "but you can never be prepared for something like this."
Olson said one of the biggest debates on campus was whether the school should have armed security officers.
Olson told the AP he thinks that Thursday's shooting will start a discussion across the country about how community colleges prepare for similar situations.
