A former Kentucky state representative has died more than a year after suffering a head injury while trying to break up a fight among students at the high school where he taught math.

House Republican spokesman Mike Goins confirmed 50-year-old Dewayne Bunch's death in a statement Wednesday afternoon. WLEX-TV in Lexington first reported that Bunch had died.

He was injured last April when he intervened in the fight at Whitley County High School. He was struck by a stray punch and hit his head on the floor of the school cafeteria.

He resigned from the Legislature last year. Voters in the 82nd District chose his wife, Regina Bunch, as his replacement.

The teenagers who were involved in the fight were charged with assault.
