The FBI says it believes a Border Patrol agent found dead in South Texas is responsible for the kidnapping and assault of three women who were in the country illegally.

A spokeswoman for the FBI in San Antonio, Michelle Lee, says the agency has investigated and believes that the agent, who was found dead in his home, is "the person responsible for the kidnappings and the assault of all three of them." She did not elaborate. The agency is not identifying the agent.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection says authorities encountered an injured woman Thursday night who said she and two others had been attacked by a man. Authorities then later found the second injured female. The third female was found at the home of the agent in Mission.
