A Navy ship carrying a family whose sailboat broke down 900 miles off the Mexican coast is expected to reach San Diego Wednesday afternoon.

California Air National Guard members reached the 36-foot sailboat to rescue the Charlotte and Eric Kaufman and their two daughters. One-year-old Lyra, who was ill with salmonella-like symptoms, quickly responded to new medication.

Charlotte Kaufman's sister, Sarah English, says the Kaufmans do not wish to speak publicly once the USS Vandegrift arrives in San Diego. She says they want to tend to their daughter first and get some rest.

English, who spoke to her sister after the rescue, said her niece has become a healthy, happy baby again with new medication. The girl is expected to see a doctor in San Diego to get a diagnosis of the illness.
