NEW YORK – A former New York carpenters union leader has been sentenced to 11 years behind bars for racketeering and labor corruption.
Michael Forde was sentenced Friday in a scheme that prosecutors say defrauded the New York local of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of millions of dollars.
Forde pleaded guilty in July to the charges, admitting he lied under oath, obstructed investigations and took cash bribes from contractors to help them rig job assignments.
Prosecutors say union workers were paid in cash at below-union rates; illegal immigrants and non-union members also were employed.
Forde was ordered to pay a $50,000 fine and to forfeit $100,000. He also must pay restitution to the union and its benefits funds. That amount is yet to be determined.
