NEW YORK – Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad's (NY'-adz) 48-hour marathon earlier this month will fund art therapy and counseling programs in two New York City neighborhoods where residents are still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Nyad's midtown Manhattan swimming marathon raised more than $110,000. The funds are being distributed by the Stamford, Conn.-based relief organization Americares.
Americares said Thursday some of the proceeds will pay for art therapy for children in an after-school program in New York's Rockaways section. The children's parents will be invited to participate in counseling sessions.
Proceeds from Nyad's swim also will fund a Staten Island health counselor who'll screen storm survivors for medical and mental health needs.
Americares CEO Curt Welling says the programs "will help restore a sense of normalcy" one year after the storm killed dozens of people in the city.
