Seattle police arrested a "highly intoxicated" man Saturday after he reported his car stolen, only for officers to find him sitting in the passenger seat when they responded to the 911 call.

The man was facing charges of making a false police report, The Seattle Times reported.

According to the Seattle Police Department, the man made the call just after midnight, claiming his 2009 Audi had been stolen and that he gave chase but the thief drove away.

When police arrived at the scene, they quickly found the car -- with the man sitting in it.

Police said he made the call because he did not want his friend, who he felt was also inebriated, to drive the Audi. It was not clear how reporting the car as stolen would prevent the friend from taking the wheel, or whether the car was being driven by the friend when police found them.

According to police, the man was right about the condition of his friend, who was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
